I live in Fukuoka, the most beautiful, kick-ass exciting city on Kyushu and my vote for the best city in Japan.  With a population of about 1.3 million people, Fukuoka is the perfect size, not crazy like Tokyo, but big enough to offer all the amenities of a large centre.  Over the past ten years, Fukuoka has been consistently rated one of Asia's two most liveable cities by Asiaweek, its baseball team, the Daiei Hawks, are the current Japan League Champions and the city's most famous contribution to modern Japan are the Hakata-bijin, or 'Fukuoka beautiful women'.  What's not to love??

Oh, and to answer your question, Fukuoka is pronounced Foo-ko-ka.  A native of Fukuoka is a 'Fukuokan'.  Not what you were thinking.  Hee hee.
